Healthy Brownies with Dark Chocolate Fudge Frosting – these brownies contain no flour or refined sugar and are low in fat!

These healthier brownies are a decadent treat containing very little fat, no refined sugar, and no flour.  So, so good and yet you can feel free to indulge in the dark chocolate fudge frosting without the guilt.

This recipe includes lots of healthy swaps…coconut sugar (I love Madhava brand) and applesauce for the white sugar, coconut oil and greek yogurt for the butter, and oat flour in place of white flour.  If you haven’t worked with oat flour yet, give it a try!  It’s an excellent replacement for white flour in baked goods and is so much healthier!  You can certainly purchase it at the store (Bob’s Red Mill gluten free oat flour is my fave), but making your own at home is a cinch too.  Simply put your oats in a blender or food processor and process until they have a fine, flour-like consistency.

These brownies are both fudgey and cakey, and the dark chocolate frosting sends them over the top!  For this batch, I also added some chopped dark chocolate M&Ms in fun spring colors.  Of course, the frosting and M&Ms are a totally optional indulgence!

  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp . vanilla
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup vanilla Greek yogurt
  • 3/4 cup oat flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
  • For the Dark Chocolate Fudge Frosting:
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 3 T milk
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare 8X8 baking dish with cooking spray.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together coconut oil, sugar, cocoa, and vanilla. Add the applesauce and yogurt and combine well.
  • In a separate bowl, combine oat flour and baking soda. Note: you can purchase oat flour or make your own by placing oats in a blender and processing until they resemble flour.
  • Add oat flour to the sugar/cocoa mixture and stir well. Stir in chocolate chips.
  • Pour the batter into prepared pan and bake for 30-32 minutes (batter will be thick.) Remove from oven and let cool.
  • For the frosting, melt chocolate chips in the microwave for 30-45 seconds. Remove and stir until completely melted and smooth. Add milk and stir well. Whisk in the powdered sugar until smooth. If frosting is too thick, add more milk 1/2 tablespoon at a time.
