What Are the Best Ways to Eat Cottage Cheese?

Cottage Cheese is definitely having a moment in 2023…and while I can’t quite get on board with cottage cheese ice cream, I can TOTALLY recommend these cottage cheese lunch bowls with fresh veggies for a quick and easy low carb meal. Cottage Cheese is the perfect protein-rich neutral base for sweet and/or savory toppings. I grew up watching my Dad eat cottage cheese topped with strawberry jam and my husband’s current fave is cottage cheese with chopped tomatoes and black pepper. The possibilities are endless when it comes to topping your cottage cheese bowl!

Ingredients

Cottage Cheese

Tomatoes

Cucumbers

Shredded Carrots

Variations & More Cottage Cheese Toppings

Try these other suggestions for topping your cottage cheese bowl:

Swap other combinations of veggies if desired such as different colors of bell peppers

Omit the Everything Bagel Seasoning and sprinkle with fresh cracked black pepper and flaky sea salt instead.

Make a PB&J version with a scoop of natural peanut butter and fruit jam.

Add a drizzle of Olive Oil for extra richness and flavor.

Make a sweet version with fresh berries or other fruit and granola.

Top with nuts (pistachios, walnuts, almonds, etc.) and a drizzle of honey.

How to Make Cottage Cheese Bowls

First, chop all the veggies.

Make the Everything Bagel Seasoning or use a premade mix.

Fill your bowl with cottage cheese and top with various veggies and seasoning. Serve immediately.

Is Cottage Cheese Good for You?

Cottage Cheese is an excellent source of protein (23 grams per cup!) and calcium. It’s also very low in carbs, making it a great choice for maintaining healthy blood sugar levels. Cottage Cheese is high in vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin B12, Selenium, Phosphorous, and Riboflavin.

While cottage cheese is generally a minimally processed dairy product, some versions/brands of cottage cheese are more processed than others, so it’s important to check the nutrition label and ingredient list for things like added sugars, additives, and thickeners.

Is Full Fat or Low-Fat Cottage Cheese Better?

The difference in calories and fat between 4% cottage cheese and low-fat cottage cheese is minimal. Full fat versions of most dairy products tend to be less processed and have better flavor but the lower fat version is typically higher in protein. As always, check nutrition labels and ingredient lists for the full story!
